Decades of Service to the Midlands

For more than 40 years, has been our honor to work alongside numerous volunteers, donors, municipality leaders, educators and community partners to create safer, more hopeful futures for more than 140,000 survivors of domestic abuse and their families.

Timeline of Organization Highlights

1972 – Concerned citizens begin planning response to domestic violence in the Midlands

1980 – Junior League of Columbia and YWCA sponsor the organization’s first survivor programs and public awareness campaign

1981 – Sistercare, Inc. is established as an independent nonprofit organization

1982 – First permanent, 24-bed shelter opens and becomes a United Way partner agency

1994 – Sistercare opens a second shelter in Lexington County

1996 – Sistercare purchases and renovates the administration and counseling building

1998-1999 – Sistercare opens satellite offices in Fairfield, Newberry, and Kershaw counties

2002 – Introduction of transitional housing program for disabled survivors of domestic violence; legal representation for impoverished battered women

2004 – Additional Lexington shelter opens

2006 – First “Women of the Year” awards presented to domestic violence survivors

2015 – Introduction of Hospital Accompaniment and Teen Outreach Programs

2024 – Clinical Building opens
